One thing I don't like about them is that they are all released at the same time. That means when they first come out, people who created their characters first get to sell them higher than those that have b-days later.

Maybe anet should occasionally add to the list so that characters who were made later still have a bit of a chance to get "newer' b-day presents. Also Phasing in and out presents over time could be fun to increase the randomness so someone doesn't know what he's going to get. Obviously the later birthdays would need "better" presents... but it'd still be nice if there were a little more uncertainty to the whole thing.

if someone gets the birthday present before everyone else that just means they've been playing longer, so it makes sense they would be awarded from a-net with getting the presents first(sticking with it from the beginning) and having the perk of selling them for the extremely inflated prices before more and more come out and they slowly drop

with this in mind...when exactly do the 3rd year minis come out

From what I understand they were created for the exact reason you don't like them - as a reward for loyal players. Admittedly it does to a certain extent suck that whilst I have 2 characters approaching 36 months my next two oldest characters have only just turned 2 years old. Then again I imagine this is the same for most players out there whom have been playing since near the beginning. For those who have played since the beginning but have, over time, deleted all their original players the Birthday present system must suck royally but I'm guessing this is by far the minority.

Considering those circumstances the only change that I would ever suggest, albeit probably being too late now, is to link the birthday presents with the 'Birthdays' of when Campaigns were added to accounts. That way regardless of what characters you've created / deleted over the years you would still get a 'loyalty' reward for having played since the beginning. There would of course be much fewer minipets around (5-20% of the current amount) but had this system been implemented since the word go that wouldn't have been an issue. Another difference would be that you might have to wait longer** to get campaign specific Birthday Minipets - CE & other minipets would of course be unaffected. Considering that using this method there would be less minipets on the market it might even make sense to have bi-annual present series as well. Of course for GW it is probably too late to implement this but I suppose it could be a nice addition for GW2. A bonus perhaps for ArenaNet, or whoever makes the most profit out of Guild Wars is that it would be an additional incentive to buy extra campaigns.

**Factions based Birthday minipets would have appeared on the 28th April 2007 as opposed to the 28th April 2006 (a year after it's release as opposed to the same day). Nightfall based birthday minipets would have appeared on the 27th Oct 2007 rather than 28th April 2007, a delay of six months from actual events***. To counter such waits it would no doubt be possible to have a series of minipets 'awarded' to players as soon as they add the campaign, although in my honest opinion this defies the whole 'loyalty reward' aspect of Birthday Minipets.

***I think those dates are correct but I may be wrong.

Yes, because my 8 characters made within the first 4 months of the game should not be allowed to get the presents they add after the 5th month. Your idea screws over the people who made characters early. And 'phasing them out' means some are unable to be opbtained at all by some people.

If you simply must buy/sell mini pets, suck it up, and deal with the situation. Don't try to make it better for YOU. Mini's are not meant to be trade fodder, they are meant to be fun rewards for playing the game.

If others get mini's first, it is because they're character has been here for so long. Either way though, the birthday presents are random, so just because they're older characters, it doesn't necessarily mean they'll get a desireable mini that people want or will sell lots for. Everyone still has a good chance at making money off of a mini, no matter if they turn that age at the beginning or later, since it's randomly generated. I think that if the 'better' birthday presents were to be given to the characters that turned of age first, over those that turn it later, then there would be a problem and people would complain. Everyone's character will turn 1,2,3 at some point and would people really think it fair that they get less of a chance at receiving a mini they desire, just because: they started playing Guild Wars at a later date, played pvp in the beginning mostly instead of caring to make a permanent character, always made/remade pve characters?

A couple of things:

1. I have some characters that are coming up on their 3rd year soon enough
2. At least some of us get duplicate minis so selling them would be nice to free up storage space
3. Some of us don't like the presents we get at all, and it isn't like we can regift them
4. Part of the fun is not knowing what you are getting... but we already know what the new minis are and there hasn't even been an announcement.
5. Changing what's available keeps it interesting for the people who are getting them and allows them to show off something new too.

They were presents for the older players, the ones that have been around longer. They shouldn't have generated a market popularity in the first place. (The b-day ones, I mean. The PvP/CE minis are fine to sell.) They were rewards for the veterans of GW, and shouldn't be being sold anyways.
